The Story of a Bicycle: Picture Story

I was invented by some lazy people for they found it difficult to walk long distances. I’m a poor man’s vehicle. I’m made of steel, have a pair of wheels, a seat, a handle and a pair of pedals.

I have been a companion of common man since ages.

I used to be every kid’s dream. Of all the things, they liked me the most. Though I was a bit expensive but still they craved for me. They used to take me to their school. They cleaned and oiled me everyday. I used to be their prized possession.

I’ve been entitled to various chores and I have fulfilled them without any complain.

In rural areas, the roads are not good and are very narrow. I’m the only means which has access to almost all corners. That’s why I’m needed there the most.

I’m determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.

Then came a time when their needs increased, which made them bring an automated version of mine. I was kept in the backyard with other useless items. I was a loner now.

For automated cycle could take them faster to places than me. But I was much more eco-friendly than them. Then again, speed is what people care about these days.

Though they made some modifications in me but still I wasn’t good enough. Nothing hurts more than trying your absolute best and still not being good enough.

No matter what people say I believe that it is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. To ride a bicycle is in itself some protection against superstitious fears, since the bicycle is the product of pure reason applied to motion. Geometry at the service of man! Give me two spheres and a straight line and I will show you how far I can take them. Voltaire himself might have invented the bicycle, since it contributes so much to man’s welfare and nothing at all to his bane. Beneficial to the health, it emits no harmful fumes and permits only the most decorous speeds. How can a bicycle ever be an implement of harm?!

And if only speed matters to you, then, my friend, there is more to life than increasing its speed.
