The Top Sports Stories Of The Week

In Sports, history is made every day. Here are the top stories of the past week:

» Novak Djokovic and Flavia Pennetta win US Open

» Australia clinch ODI series against England

» Manchester City at the top of the English Premier League

Tennis: Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in 4 sets to clinch another US Open title. Flavia Pennetta beat Roberta Vinci to win her first ever Grand Slam and announced her retirement moments after her victory. To the delight of the Indians, both pairs of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis and Hingis and Leander Paes won their respective doubles category.

Cricket: In spite of a formidable show by the English throughout the summer, Australia sailed to an easy victory in the final of the 5 match ODI series, winning it 3-2. Beating arch rivals in an away series, the current World Champions have announced loud and clear that they are truly the best that there is right now and will be a force to reckon with for many months to come.

Football: We are into week 6 of the Barclays English Premier League and Manchester City is sitting pretty at the top of the table with 15 points, followed by Leicester City with 11 and Manchester United and Arsenal with 10. Defending champions Chelsea are currently at the 17th spot with a mere 4 points in 5 matches. Hopefully the big win against Arsenal will set them back on track.

Don’t miss: The Davis Cup being played in Delhi currently. At this time, Czech Republic lead 2-1 to India (Singles 1: Rasol beat Bhambri; Singles 2: Devvarman beat Vesley; Doubles: Stepanek-Pavlasek beat Bopanna-Paes). The finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow; make sure you catch them live!

We will be back next week with an update on that and much more, so stay tuned!
