“If you don’t know what shipping is, run, run and never be involved with it.”
Do books (and their world) define your life? Is a part of your brain, day in and day out, thinking about your favourite fandom? Do you cry every time your OTP kisses?
Then you will relate to every word I say.
Being an introvert is, perhaps, the best and the worst thing that could happen to me. I am as comfortable being alone, as I am with the people I love. However, I have come across many people (sometimes the ones closest to me) who have never, and will never understand what it is to be an introvert. I am judged as being arrogant, selfish, and ungrateful when all I want is a little peace and quiet.
Books have been an indispensable part of my life since I can remember; I have just evolved from reading Champak and Chanda Mama, to Harry Potter and Dan Brown.
As much as my life is about books, the people around me, more often than not, grow tired of my ranting about my favourite characters. However, I have always been disappointed with mainstream websites like Facebook as a medium to talk about what I love. My acceptance for Facebook as a social media platform is decreasing by the day.
Every one of us has high points in their lives, and we may want to share it with our friends, but every day on Facebook seems to be a high point for some. I even left myself wondering on some days, why my life isn’t a fairytale like others’. But it didn’t take me long to find out that behind all the pouting selfies is a normal life, without the glamour.
While Facebook is about where I just checked in, Tumblr is about what I just read, and what I think about it. All this, coupled with the GIFs and fan pages is what makes it one of the few platforms I spend my time on.
What is Tumblr?
Tumblr is a micro-blogging website founded in 2007 by David Karp. It was purchased by Yahoo in 2013 for $1.1 billion.
Tumblr got its name from a series of ‘tumblelogs’ (a variation on blogs that stream towards shorter stream-of-consciousness posts, often with mixed media), and that is what Tumblr, in its true essence is.
Why has it become famous?
Tumblr has become famous because it is the anti-blog; most people who run blogs on Tumblr are not hungry for an audience, and it is also the reason that a fairly large number of blogs are private. You may be a feminist, a social justice activist, a businessman trying to make your company grow, a fangirl, or a fanboy, you will always find someone like yourself among the users.
Most of my experience with Tumblr is connecting with people of my fandom (the community that surrounds a TV show/movie/book etc.), reading fan fictions (when someone takes either the story or characters of a certain piece of work, whether it be a novel, TV show, movie, and create their own story based on it), and debating about a particular plot or character.
None of my friends know my Tumblr URL(s), and I am more than happy keeping it that way. Because for once, I am glad being anonymous, being judged on what I like and dislike, rather than what I wear and where I go.
